How competitive is the NHSC scholarship?
Medical students must be US citizens, in school full-time, and complete a primary care residency to be eligible for this program. The process is competitive, with around ten percent of applicants receiving scholarship.
How do I get an NHSC scholarship?
You commit to a minimum two years of full-time service in exchange for a full year of scholarship support. You must serve at an NHSC-approved site in a HPSA. The total number of years you serve will depend on the number of school years of NHSC SP support you received. (This cannot exceed four school years.)
How do I get out of my NHSC contract?
Whether you resign or your NHSC-approved site(s) terminates you, contact us immediately through the BHW Customer Service Portal. If eligible for a transfer, we will give you a certain timeframe in which to obtain employment at an NHSC-approved site.
How much is the NHSC stipend?
During the 2021-2022 school year, NHSC scholars will receive a monthly stipend (currently estimated at $1,434 before federal taxes) to assist with living expenses.

If you work full-time at an HPSA, you can get up to $50,000 in student loan assistance working a two-year contract. Regardless of the award, you receive in student loan repayment assistance, it isn’t taxable.

The NHSC will pay up to $25,000* for an initial 2 years of half-time clinical practice to clinicians serving at an NHSC-approved service site with a designated HPSA score.
How do you get into the Nurse Corps?
Army Reserve
- Diploma, associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program.
- Completion of the Officer Basic Leadership course.
- Must be between the ages of 21 and 42 years (waiver is available)
- Must hold a current, valid and unrestricted nursing license.
- Must be a permanent U.S. resident.
